It came about in opposition to the conservatism of the Royal Academy and the stagnation of the formerly radical New English Art Club. The group espoused no particular style or aesthetic, but rather acted as a focal point for the more progressive elements in British art; indeed, Walter Sickert, in a speech at its opening exhibition, spoke of the need to keep the group free from attachment to specific styles or factions. Nevertheless, there were moments when many of the participating artists worked in a similar style and it has been argued that these were the more successful moments for the London Group. The group was at its most vital through the 1930s, surviving internal differences regarding different avant garde and more academic artistic styles.
